In today’s fast-paced world, food waste often goes unnoticed. Yet, few realize that around 1 billion tons of food are wasted globally each year, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all food produced for human consumption. This alarming figure not only reflects inefficiency but also has serious impacts on the environment, climate, and the future of sustainable development.

At VAS Hanoi, instead of traditional theory-based lessons, students were engaged through relatable stories such as “Where does each grain of rice go?”. Through these reflections, they began to understand that every portion of food is the result of immense effort, natural resources, and time.

This awareness has inspired a range of practical, creative, and meaningful actions:

• Recycling fruit peels like orange and pomelo into natural scented sachets.
• Composting organic waste from vegetables and fruit scraps.
• STEM experiments creating eco-friendly dishwashing liquid from fruit peels.
• Most importantly, learning to take just enough food and finish their meals, saying no to waste in everyday life.

Beyond hands-on activities, the school’s consistent efforts in environmental education have been recognized with the ASEAN Eco-School Award 2024. This prestigious achievement reflects the school’s commitment to fostering a green – clean – beautiful learning environment, where sustainable values are not only taught but also practiced and shared with teachers, students, and parents alike.

Through these initiatives, “zero waste” is no longer an abstract concept but has become a daily habit, nurtured within the school community.
